Hey all. JAWS 5.1 is now available, for those of you who use it. I am going to download it as soon as I get home. I love new JAWS releases. Looks like a good version, accordint to the features and enhancements section. Let me know if you get it!
Yo what's up man? Yeah I downloaded new 5.1 on monday, and so far, am quite pleased with it. It seems most stable jaws yet, I've been runnin it since monday without reboot and jaws hasn't crashed once, the record so far was 5 days, see if this 1 can break the record? Lol. But yeah, it seems a lot more stable in responcive. Another thing, I'm so so so so fuckin glad that the "merge" option is back! Damn that was so anoying all these upgrades from 4.x to 5 when I couldn't merge settings, as someone who custermise jaws a lot I'm so damn happy to see that back!
Yeah, the murge settings feature is a most welcoming one I must say. 5.1 also seems more accessible with AIM than 5.0 was. I never had a problem with the stability of 5.0, but maybe IK was running a less stable OS than xp wich is what I run here.
Hey guys. I found the March update of 5.0 to be quite unstable on my computer. My whole system is running better now with 5.1 on it. I do agree that it seems to be the most stable and responsive JAWS yet. I also got a 5.0.6 something update at work. I don't think that particular one was ever posted online, but it is also very stable and doesn't have the bugs that 5..844 had. Cheers.
Hi, I didn't find jaws 5 unstable, it was a lot lot more stable than 4.x, but it wasn't perfect, but then what software is? It's just that, occasionally it'd crash and I'd have to use task manager in XP to end the process and then jaws would start fine again, so yes I do run XP and as I said, I don't think 5.06 what ever it was wasn't unstable, but I got a feeling that this 5.1 is even more stable, mind you we can't see yet if my record of jaws working without restart for more than 5 days because I downloaded XPSP2 last night so had to restart several times. Talking of SP2 I found a small problem with jaws..not sure what's causing it, but, every time I start computer since SP2, if I go to start menu before everything was loaded, by everything I mean things in the background not neceserilly aps that launch a full screen, so things like anti-virus, firewall ETC...anyway if I go to start menu before everything was loaded, jaws doesn't read most menus or even content of most aps, for example in IE it will not read the body of the page or even links when you tab, solution is restarting jaws and everything is fine. I am not sure what's causing it, I got a suspission that it's Norton Anti-virus as that seems to be the last thing and thing that takes the longest to start up...since SP2 it does seem slightly longer for everything to load on startup, if I wate a bit longer, jaws doesn't have this menus/ap reading problem, but it's almost impossible to know that everything is loaded since, as I said, we're talking about processes that run in the background. Of course, this is not a major problem, but inconvenience, but it'd be interesting to know what's causing it, why is it happening and has anyone else expereienced something like this since SP2?
I found the jaws5.0 updates more buggy then the orriginal jaws5, so I went back to it. I will have to give jaws51 a try and see how I like it. Does anyone know if it will be sent to those of us who are authorized to get it on cd?

I think u have to download it. The next version that will be mailed on CD will be 5.5. I hope for u that u r not using a dial-up connection, because even here with my t1 connection, it took me close to an hour to download the 33mb file.
Actually, i think the next release is jaws 6.0. i was at the nfb convention this year and they were talking about jaws version 6.0. The jaws 5.0.6 something that was mentioned earlier on here was 5.00.621 ans was the original release of jaws 5.0. From, Brandon Misch
Actually, you can get 5.1 on a CD, but it will not be sent to you, you will have to contact FS and they will send it to you for "a small shipping cost" what ever it is.
I just downloaded it, and the only thing that seems weird to me is that it doesn't pause/take a breath after a colon like in previous versions, but it may just be the fact that I'm not use to it.

Hey guys. I have one question about JAWS 5.1. When navigating on Internet Explorer, often it will require that the virtual cursor be turned off and then turned back on before I can actually begin reading a newly opened Web page. For example, if I am on the Zone and hit back to go to the previously opened Zone page, the page will load but the arrow keys still give me view of the previously opened page. This happens a lot. The solution is to shut down the virtual cursor and then reactivate it, but I was wondering if this bug can be fixed by doing something on my end. Thanks all.
wel... about that problem, I haven't got it so far. Jfw 5.1 is more responsive and stable; and what about the signs? have you tryed to put it in diferent languages? for example if you put it inspanish, unlike other previous versoins, it said "blank" but now, it says "en blanco" which means, exactly, blank. And the puntuation marks are pronownced in each language, as it is, not in the english language.
I cannot believe that a t1 connection took almost one hour to download; I have a broadband conection, and it took near to 4 minutes or less to download.
Yes, I use French a lot and was glad to hear that punctuations are now being pronounced in each language as they should be!
